    HTC Desire C (Discontinued)

      TOP FEATURES

      Now discontinued

The obvious question is of course, is the new budget handset a desirable android smartphone? In our HTC Desire C review we aim to find out. So let's take a look.

This is an entry-level smartphone from HTC and first impressions are that it is a decent effort.

      Feels light, feels right

It's fairly lightweight at 99 grams and has a polycarbonate construction but it doesn't feel like a cheap and nasty handset with no obvious creaks or bends in the casing. It feels good in the hand too thanks to it's curvy styling and it looks like a more expensive handset too.

      Ample power

Running Android 4.0 on a 600Mhz processor and 512MB of RAM memory under a 480x320 pixel 3.5 inch screen - if that seems small you're in iPhone 3GS territory here by the way - it is certainly a reasonable amount of power, though not blindingly fast as you might expect at this price level.

The screen itself is clear and bright with sharp colours, though you might struggle a little in bright sunlight, but surfing the web was a pleasure - we expected it to be a little slow but not a bit of it.

      Impressive camera

A 5 megapixel camera with plenty of advanced scene and settings features you perhaps have no right to expect from an entry level model features here, though it lacks autofocus and flash but everyday snaps are decent enough quality.

Video is an acceptable but not mind blowing 640x480 resolution. The HTC Desire C has superb audio capabilities though with Beats audio included, another unexpected extra for this price level.

      Connection credentials

Connectivity surprisingly includes NFC for contactless payments for example, as well as Wi-Fi, 3G, stereo Bluetooth 4.0, and USB. A 3.5mm headphone socket is also present.

This is a feature set you would not have found for much less than three times the price just a few years ago and there are many more expensive handsets out there that do not have NFC.

      Our summary

Overall then if you are looking for a budget android handset for whatever reason you will not be disappointed with what the HTC Desire C has to offer. For the asking price we can confidently say this is definitely a desirable piece of kit.
